SPONSORED BY OOAED

The breadth of our mechanical engineering heritage is evident in ASME International's landmarks program, a roster of significant artifacts, sites and collections. As of 2001, nearly 220 landmarks have been designated since the program began in 1971.

These pages include the ME Landmarks nominated and sponsored by OOAED since 1999 and designated as such by the History and Heritage Committee of ASME International.

The Division is grateful to Mr. John T. Robinson who have been leading the efforts in recognizing the historical landmarks in our profession. The primary members of the OOAE Division may contact him to see a Mechanical Engineering landmark related to any areas of ocean, offshore and arctic engineering nominated for this prestigious designation.

Submitted by John Robinson, June 2002. The History and Heritage Committee of ASME has approved the nomination of "Mr. Charlie", the first mobile offshore rig, as a historic mechanical engineer landmark.

The planning of the designation ceremony with all parties involved and the production of the commemorative brochure have been completed.

More information on "Mr. Charlie" can be found at the web site of the International Petroleum Museum in Morgan City, Louisiana, USA  and at three more links that can be seen on the left frame of that page.

2000
USS Albacore is designated a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.
Submitted by John Robinson, June 2000.  Having served as a prototype for modern-day submarine concepts and virtually changing the future design development and functionality of the U.S. undersea fleet, the USS. Albacore (AGSS-569) was designated a historic mechanical engineering landmark, Saturday morning, May 13, 2000 at Albacore Park (Port of Portsmouth Maritime Museum), in Portsmouth, NH. The intermittent drizzle did nothing to dampen the spirits of some 80 attendees who gathered under the tent in front of the museum.  Mr. John T. Robinson, the nominator of the landmark, represented the OOAE Division, which sponsored the nomination, and the reception at the Sheraton Harborside following the ceremony. The designation ceremony was also featured in the May 2000 Online Newsletter "History News" of ASME International.  You can find the technical details of USS Albacore in Historical Landmark Commemorative Brochure....  (Acrobat Reader: 1041KB PDF file)
