CHAIRMAN'S CORNER

OOAE DIVISION
OF ASME

July 2003

Following the terms as OOAE Division Chairs, served by our distinguished colleagues Professors Stephen Liu, Cengiz Ertekin, and Arvid Ness, I look forward to serving the Division with equal success.  My term as Chair of the Division and the Executive Committee runs from 1 July, 2003 to 30 June 2004. I am optimistic, that with the members elected to the Executive Committee (EC) for the upcoming year listed in the table below, and the experience of the members of the Extended Executive Committee (EEC), we will have a productive year.  EEC includes EC, past Division Chairs, OMAE Conference Organizers and Symposium Coordinators. That is, in addition to the people in the table below, EEC includes Drs. Subrata Chakrabarti, Denby G. Morrison, Mamdouh Salama, Carlos G. Soares, Walter Keuhnlein.

The OOAE Division mission is to serve and promote our field of Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. As a group, we will continue projects we started in previous years to better serve our membership, such as

bullet

 Expanding our membership

bullet

Attracting young engineers to the Division

bullet

Organizing the annual OMAE Conference

bullet

Maintaining our web page through ASME

bullet

Supporting the Student Design Competition

bullet

Electing new members to the EC

bullet

Ahieving a healthy balance and collaboration between industry and academia in all OOAE activities.

We will also undertake some new initiatives, such as

bullet

Appointing a representative of the Division for each country which participates in OOAE activities to better approach and serve that country.

bullet

Drafting a long-term strategic plan for the Division.

bullet

Detailing some procedures established by the bylaws, such as decision and presentation of awards, student competition, OMAE budgeting, and OMAE site selection.

I look forward to working with the EEC to achieve our goals and seeing all of you at the 22nd OMAE Conference in Cancun.
