JOURNAL of OFFSHORE
MECHANICS & ARCTIC ENGINEERING
Information for
Authors |
|
(See also
JOMAE Online Journal Home Page)
PURPOSE:
 | One purpose of the Society is to disseminate
technical information of permanent interest through the publication of a
series of Transactions quarterlies. |
VOLUNTARY PAGE CHARGE:
 | Papers selected for publication in the ASME Transactions are subject
to a voluntary Page Charge of $75 per journal page, which will be
invoiced, through the author, to the author's company, institution, or
agency. Publication is not dependent on payment of the voluntary page
charge. 100 reprints are provided when paper has been published in a
journal and the voluntary page charge has been paid. Additional reprints
can be ordered from ASME, Technical Publishing Department, Three Park
Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5990, USA. |
MANDATORY EXCESS-PAGE CHARGE:
 | The lead author of a Transactions paper which exceeds the standard
length of nine pages (9000 words) will be assessed a mandatory excess-page
charge of $200 per page for each page over nine journal pages. This charge
will be included, as a separate item, on the same invoice as the voluntary
Page Charge. |
MANUSCRIPT:
 | Manuscripts should be submitted in final form to the Technical Editor
or the cognizant Associate Editor. Each manuscript must be accompanied by
a statement that it has not been published elsewhere nor has it been
submitted for publication elsewhere. If the manuscript has been considered
by another Division or other papers review agency of the ASME, the results
of that consideration should be noted in the statement.
|
 | Titles of papers should be brief. The author should state his business
connection, the title of his position, and his mailing address. A short
abstract (50 to 100 words) should be included on the first page
immediately preceding the introductory paragraph of the paper. Five copies
of the manuscript including copies of illustrations are required. Original
illustrations should not initially be sent. The original illustrations and
a printers copy of the manuscript typed in double spacing on one side of
the page with wide margins on 8 1/2 x 11 in. (22 x 28 cm) opaque white
paper should be retained by the author until requested by the Technical
Editor. There are detailed instructions for the preparation of manuscripts
and drawings in ASME Manual MS-4. |
 | Click here for instructions on submitting either
hard copy illustrations or
electronic illustrations. |
USE OF SI UNITS:
 | All manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Offshore Mechanics and
Arctic Engineering must use U.S. customary units with SI (Metric) units in
parentheses in text. Figures and tables should use U.S. customary units
and include SI units in some form. |
MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSIONS:
 | All mathematical expressions should be typewritten. Greek letters and
other symbols not available on the typewriter should be carefully inserted
in ink. Care should be taken to distinguish between capital and lowercase
letters, between zero (0) and letter (O), between the numeral (1) and the
letter (l), etc. A letter representing a vector cannot be printed with an
arrow above or below it. The letter should be underscored with a single
wavy line wherever it appears in the text, to designate boldface type. |
 | A list of symbols carefully marked for the use of the editor (thus;
<kappa>, Greek l.c. kappa), if it has not been included in the body of the
paper, should accompany the manuscript on a separate page. Numbers that
identify mathematical expressions should be enclosed in parentheses. Care
should be taken to arrange all tables and mathematical expressions in such
a way that they will fit into a single column when set in type. Equations
that might extend beyond the width of one column (fractions that should
not be broken or long expressions enclosed in parentheses) should be
rephrased to go on two or more lines within column width. Fractional
powers are preferred to root signs and should always be used in more
elaborate formulas. The solidus should be used instead of the horizontal
line for fractions whenever possible. |
LENGTH:
 | The text of an ASME paper should not exceed 9000 words (nine printed
pages in a journal) or equivalent. A Brief Note should not exceed 1500
words or equivalent. Discussions should generally not exceed 500 words.
Longer discussions will be reviewed in the same manner as Brief Notes.
Closures normally should not exceed 250 words per discussion. In computing
equivalence, a typical one-column figure or table is equal to 250 words. A
one-line equation is equal to 30 words. The use of a build-up fraction or
an integral sign or summation sign in a sentence will require additional
space equal to 10 words. |

Author Resources web page. |
REFERENCES:
 | With the February 2000 issue of JOMAE, the References will be
numbered. For more information, download the
New
Reference Format article. |
 | References should be cited within the text in numerical order
according to their order of appearance. The numbered reference citation
should be enclosed in brackets, e.g., "It was shown by Prusa [1] that the
width of the plume decreases under these conditions." In the case of two
citations, the numbers should be separated by a comma [1, 2]. In the case
of more than two reference citations, the numbers should be separated by a
dash [5-7]. |
 | Acceptable references include: journal articles, dissertations,
published conference proceedings, numbered paper preprints from
conferences, books, reports available from the U.S. Government, submitted
articles if the journal is identified, and private communications. |
 | References should be listed in numerical order according to their
order of appearance within the text at the end of the paper. |
REPRINTS:
 | The lead author is entitled to 25 preprints free
of charge. Larger quantities of preprints can be ordered from the ASME
Order Department, 22 Law Drive, Box 2300, Fairfield, NJ 07007-2300.
Quotations will be sent on request. |
SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS:
Please submit manuscripts for review to Editor or any
one of the Associate Editors following the electronic
submission route. Please access
http://journaltool.asme.org, select Journal of Offshore Mechanics and
Arctic Engineering and follow the instructions. You will be prompted to
input data concerning the author(s) and to upload your document.
