OMAE CONFERENCES
The
28th International Conference on The history of OMAE shows that the activities of the division had started in the form of an annual conference. The first symposium was affiliated with the Energy Resources Technology Conference & Exhibition (ETCE) and held in February 1982 in New Orleans. With time, the symposium rapidly grew into a major technical conference in offshore an arctic engineering with a broad international support. Currently, the main event of the OOAE Division is the annual international conference which is held in North America as well as international sites. The conference is sometimes hosted by the local chapter of the host society. The first conference outside a North America was in Tokyo in 1986, and it was a huge success. Some of the international sites for previous conferences include The Hague, Netherlands; Stavanger, Norway; Glasgow, Scotland; Copenhagen, Denmark; Lisbon, Portugal. In North America, New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, and Calgary, for example, have hosted OMAE conferences (see the Table below for all sites). With the merger of the OMAE and OE Divisions of ASME into the OOAE Division, Ocean Engineering Symposium is added to the venue starting with OMAE '02 in Oslo. Starting with OMAE 2009, the Executive Committee of the OOAE Division unanimously voted to name the OMAE conference series as "International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering, however, it was also decided to keep the acronym OMAE because of name recognition in the engineering committee.
Compared to the single symposium in 1982, the more recent conferences have matured to incorporate a week long program with seven concurrent symposia and over 400 technical papers. In fact, the co-sponsorship of many international professional societies shows that the OMAE Conference is recognized by the technical community of the world as an outstanding event. In addition to the regular OMAE conferences held annually, the OOAE Division may hold specialty conferences depending on the interests of the members. Some of these are: 1986 OMAE Specialty Conference, New Orleans, Mamdouh Salama (Chair) 2004 OMAE FPSO Integrity Conference , Houston, Steve Balint (Conference Chair) and Mamdouh Salama (Technical Program Chair) A collection of proceedings is published from each annual conference to include all the papers presented at the conference. These proceedings can be ordered from ASME's web site (select the OMAE link). Each paper published in the proceedings must successfully go through a peer review process. The Proceedings is published on CD-ROM starting with OMAE '98. The Author's Instructions to prepare CD-ROM publication ready manuscripts are available. Beginning with OMAE '02 in Oslo, the entire publication process has been made electronic through a dedicated web tool developed by ASME International. The annual conferences have been organized to include eight themed (regular) symposia which focus on interdisciplinary innovative technical developments in the ocean, offshore and arctic areas. In addition, every year some specialized symposia are introduced. The regular symposia are:
