Ocean Space Utilization
Symposium
Background
This symposium was first initiated during the 16th International OMAE
'97 Conference in Yokohama, Japan. The Oceans represent the next frontier to
provide sustainable food, energy, materials and land space for humanity. In the
coastal region, very large floating structures should have minimal impact on the
ocean environment and serve to enhance resource development. They are the least
likely of all facilities to suffer from earthquake damage. Currently, on-site
experiments of a Japanese national project aimed to develop a floating airport,
a floating container yard, among others, are being carried out in Yokosuka, near
Yokohama. There are also plans for Mobile Offshore Bases, floats, waste
incineration plants, etc. that involve very large floating structures.
