Polar and Arctic Science &
Technology Symposium
Background
Significant progress has been made during the last two decades in understanding
the cold regions of the earth. The driving force behind this growth of knowledge
was the need for information for environmentally compatible design,
construction, safe operation, maintenance, and integrity of both offshore and
onshore structures in these fragile regions. Recent decline in the oil and gas
industry activities have provided a new stimulus for understanding the processes
that control the behavior of ice-rich soils and the ice-infested water bodies of
the world and the environmental aspects of the polar regions that could
significantly influence the global quality of life. Environmental concerns, such
as oil spills, impact of global changes, construction, development and
operations in the arctic, and future research, are topics of interest.
